#WeToo

Updated: Aug 31, 2018

This essay has come up a few times in conversations around the zero-overtime concept, so I thought it might warrant a reposting here. It places teacher walkouts within the broader societal context of the #metoo movement and the women's marches. Interestingly, it was written by a man.

The author does a remarkable job of zeroing in on the fear that keeps us teachers from questioning norms. We all know it, even if it is unspoken. We know the implicit condemnation that surely will come from not putting in the extra hours, not purchasing our own supplies, not doing more (because there is always more to do): you don't care about the kids.

There is nothing that hurts more. It is a dagger to the heart of any educator. No self-respecting person would even consider a career in education if s/he didn't care passionately about helping young people succeed. To call that into question is an attack on our very reason for being. We will do anything to avoid appearing uncaring.

And that is how the system lumbers on, continuing to grind us in its gears.
